You may have noticed we keep xylitol candies for you to sample in our office. These are all-natural, sugar-free, and have vegetable-derived coloring. They also taste good.
But why are they here? They help prevent tooth decay. Here’s how:
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is derived from corn cobs (not corn). Originally it was derived from birch bark.
It was discovered that harmful bacteria cannot metabolize the sugar alcohol, and it disrupts the ability of the bacteria to communicate, and form “plaque”. This disruption prevents the bacteria from being able to layer upon itself.
Studies in the 1970’s showed that with 3-5 servings a day of xylitol, plaque can be reduced by up to 50%!
The study measured the amount of plaque that was scraped off of each patient, and weighed, both wet and dry.
With a 50% reduction, it is worth it to try integrating xylitol servings into your daily routine.
