Over the years, I’ve had a handful of dentists confront me for removing amalgam (mercury fillings) by patient request.
The fact is that amalgam fillings can often leak considerable amounts of mercury when a patient chews, drinks something hot or cold, or grinds their teeth.
What’s shocking is that these “groups” are fairly broad, and include:
- pregnant women
- women who are planning to become pregnant
- nursing women and their newborns/infants
- and more
The FDA says all of these groups were found to be at greater risk for potential harmful health effects from mercury vapor being released from amalgam.
But, they still allow dentists across the country to place them!
Again, these high-risk groups are really broad. Children alone made up 20% of the world’s population in 2010! Accordingly, I’d argue the FDA might consider a ban on the use of amalgam outright – especially when there are so many bio-safe, modern alternatives.
At Moonlight Beach Dental, the removal of amalgam is done safely. In almost every one of these cases, we find decay that has grown underneath poorly-sealed margins on old, failing amalgams.
Would you want a nice, biocompatible, white resin filling – or one of these old-fashioned amalgams?
